Rotary Club Navi Mumbai creates history in Eye Donation Event with over 7500 attendees

Just when the city of dreams was celebrating the all famous Standard Chartered Marathon with over 40k participates on the 17th January 2016, there was an effort for a world record in its sister city Navi Mumbai. Largest walk against blindness (eradicating blindness and other eye related disorders) was conducted under the title “TAMASO MA JYOTIRGAMAYA” by the ‘One Vision Foundation’ in coordination with Rotary Club of Smart City Navi Mumbai.

According to the managing authorities of Rotary Club-it stood as one of their essential responsibilities to turn the hi-tech Navi Mumbai city into a “NO BLIND” zone; thus making it the true smart city. Currently, there is a notable scarcity for eye corneas in the city and so there is a requirement to promote the issue and create awareness about eye-donation and pledge.
The event for a grand success as it received a whopping reaction from over 7500 people. The participants ranged from all walks of life-the who’s who of Navi Mumbai to government officials to celebrities.

The part taking of 1200 school kids was the highlight as they created a human eye structure. They were supported by 2000 college students and employees from more than 100 organizations from in and around Navi Mumbai.

The main event (the walk) began at 7am starting from the AEHI hospital-Palm Beach road in Sanpada. The Zumba dance and other jamming session (song and dance) was an encouraging move to uplift the zeal in the walkers. Rotary Club of Smart City Navi Mumbai had all requied arrangements in place for the mega event.

Special guests for the walk included names like Shankar Mahadevan (singer, music director), Vivek Oberoi (actor), and RJ Archana (radio jockey from Radio City). Craylta Mouhini (Brazilian singer) along with the other guests pledged of donating their eyes with Rotarians and participants.

The start was an auspicious with the lamp lighting ceremony which was done by a guests list that included Navi Mumbai City Mayor Sudhakar Sonawane, Police Commissioner for Navi Mumbai Prabhat Rajan, Virendra Widge Rotary District Avenue Chair along with M.K.Chettiar (Asst Governor for Rotary district 3140 & Founder/CEO-Bharatbook).
